Jewish Presence in the Azores

In 1836, a group of Marrano Jews of Sephardic origin purchased a house on Rua do Brum, in the heart of Ponta Delgada, with the intention of transforming it into a Synagogue and the rabbi’s residence. This marked the second Jewish presence in the Azores, following the expulsion of Jews from Portugal in the 15th and 16th centuries, during which many were either forced to convert to Christianity or exiled.

The Cabril Mill is a living, centuries-old testament to the region of Castelo de Paiva.

Owned by the Coelho family, it is one of the few mills that have stood the test of time, still grinding corn and rye using the natural force of the Sardoura River, a Douro tributary.

Maria Irene lives in Paraíso, on the outskirts of Castelo de Paiva.

Almost every day, she makes her way along the national road, returning from the fields where she harvests vegetables, greens, and legumes.

With a wheelbarrow full of the day’s freshest produce, she walks with a smile on her face and a warmth that could brighten anyone’s day.
